Kindergarten writing journals
Most kids can start drawing without too much thought. Writing should be fun, not a chore. Writing prompts also expose kids to a wide variety of topics to write about. You can plan and prep them by year with a spiral spine or by quarter staples will work here.

Primary writing journals
Later in previous writing sessions as kids are ready move on to labeling the items in the picture or writing a sentence on your modeled writing. Once students are able to write a simple sentence we recommend transitioning to the lined version, but some kids are also happy to continue using the unlined version. As kids begin to write basic sentences and understand spacing between letters and words introduce the lined version. Others include lists to help kids learn to write for different purposes. Three have images for children to color and one has a blank space so kids can design their own cover illustration. However, some might do better if they are able to choose between different prompts when responding. Over time they will write longer.
